GHV BUD

Arriving in Budapest

Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD) is one of the few "real" capital airports anywhere in the GHV network — full transfer terminal, Schengen and non-Schengen piers, the works. For Brasov travellers it's a 90-minute hop that opens up onward connections you'd otherwise need to drive to Otopeni for, and that single fact is what most people use the route for, not Budapest itself.

Why this route

The GHV-Budapest link survives because it does two jobs at once: a city break for Brasov families who can't be bothered with the eight-hour drive across the Carpathians, and a transfer for anyone going onward to a third destination Wizz doesn't fly to from Brasov directly. Budapest is also where you'd connect onto a long-haul flight via Lufthansa, KLM or Turkish if the itinerary makes sense — none of those carriers serve GHV today, so a self-connect via BUD is often the shortest path.

Getting from the airport to Budapest

BUD is 22 km southeast of central Budapest. The cheapest route in is bus 100E direct to Deák Ferenc tér (the city centre's hinge metro junction), 45 minutes, single ticket from the BKK machine. Bus 200E plus a metro change is the older route — same destination, marginally cheaper, less convenient with luggage. A registered taxi (Főtaxi from the rank) runs about HUF 8,500 to the centre on a metered fare — Uber doesn't operate in Hungary. If you're connecting to a Wizz flight, BUD allows self-transfers but not protected ones — you're rebooking your own missed leg, so build a 3-hour minimum buffer.

Return-leg tips

Hungarian wines (Tokaji, Egri Bikavér), paprika in the proper tin and Túró Rudi from any supermarket are the Brasov return- basket classics — none face EU customs friction. Pálinka in duty-free is heavily marked up versus a Spar in town, so buy it the day before if you have space. BUD security is predictable but the Schengen vs non-Schengen split inside the terminal means you'll change pier on most onward connections — check the screens before settling in for a coffee. Allow two hours for the GHV-bound flight; Wizz's dedicated check-in desks shut 40 minutes before departure.
