Arriving in Hurghada
Hurghada (HRG) is the only non-EU, non-Schengen destination on the regular GHV network — and that makes the route operationally different from every other one Wizz flies from Brasov. You will need a passport (not a Romanian ID card), you will pay a visa-on-arrival fee, and you will land in a Red Sea resort airport that's been built almost entirely for European package tourism over the last 20 years.
Why this route
Brasov-Hurghada is the winter-sun route. Wizz runs it primarily October through April with two flights a week, occasionally three around the December- January peak. The Romanian package-holiday market to Hurghada is mature — most travellers book the route as part of an inclusive resort booking via a tour operator, and the per-seat fare is sometimes cheaper bundled than as a standalone Wizz ticket. Compare both.
Getting from the airport to Hurghada
Hurghada Airport is 5 km from the El Dahar old town but 15-25 km from most resort strips (Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay, El Gouna further north). Resort transfer should be pre-booked through your operator — taxis from outside the terminal will quote 4x the fair rate and negotiating in the heat with luggage is no fun. Visa-on-arrival is $25 USD cash (USD or EUR; stamping booth before passport control). The Red Sea snorkelling and dive industry is genuine; if you've never been, day-trips from any resort jetty to Giftun island are the standard introduction. Onward to Luxor by road is 4-5 hours; only worth it if you're staying at least a full day at the Valley of the Kings.
Return-leg tips
Egyptian customs limits inbound from non-EU are tighter than from Schengen routes: 200 cigarettes and 1L spirits per adult, declarable jewellery over €10,000. Bring back papyrus art (real papyrus, not banana leaf — ask at a museum shop, not a bazaar), spices and quality cotton sheets; avoid the stuffed crocodile statues, the "antiquities" replicas (often cheaper at home) and anything alabaster (heavy and fragile). Currency- wise: Egyptian pound (EGP) is non-convertible outside Egypt — spend it at the airport before flying or accept the loss. HRG security has a separate non-resident pier; allow 2.5 hours because the queues are unpredictable in peak season and bag-check is thorough.
