Arriving in Katowice

Katowice (KTW) is the air hub of Poland's Silesia region, 30 km north of Katowice city and roughly 90 km from Krakow. For most travellers from Brasov, this isn't a "Katowice" trip — it's a Krakow trip with a less crowded, cheaper-to-park airport at the back end. The flight is short, the route is steady, and the cost gap versus a direct Krakow lift is substantial.

Why this route

Wizz operates Brasov-Katowice as a hybrid: diaspora traffic to Polish-Romanian families and a steady leisure load heading for Krakow's old town, Wieliczka salt mine and Auschwitz day-trip. Frequency is two or three days a week year-round, and the route is one of the more frequently delayed in the network during Polish-side winter weather (Katowice sits at altitude and gets fog). Build a bit of schedule slack for January-February travel.

Getting from the airport to Katowice

For Krakow, the easiest path is the dedicated Krakow Direct shuttle from KTW (90 minutes, around PLN 60, drops at Krakow main station). The cheaper option is a regional bus to Katowice main station then the InterCity to Krakow Glówny (90-100 minutes total including transfer). Within Katowice itself, the Spodek arena, Silesian Museum and the rebuilt industrial heritage Nikiszowiec district are all worth a half-day. Onward to the Tatra mountains (Zakopane), rent a car — train is slow, bus options are awkward. Hostels and three-stars in Krakow are cheap by Romanian standards and significantly cheaper than Italian or German equivalents.

Return-leg tips

Polish vodka (Wyborowa, Belvedere if you splurge, and the regional Goldwasser from Gdansk if you can find it), amber jewellery from Krakow's Cloth Hall (cheap and authentic, but check certification on higher-value pieces) and proper Polish sausage vacuum-packed at any city deli — that's the Brasov-bound cargo. KTW security is fast outside Polish school holidays. Two hours from check-in is ample.
