Arriving in Dortmund

Dortmund (DTM) is a small, no-frills airport on the eastern edge of the Ruhr — Germany's old industrial belt that has reinvented itself as a logistics, university and football corridor. It's not a tourist airport in the postcard sense, but for the Brasov network it is one of the densest, busiest and most-loved routes Wizz operates. Why? Because the Romanian diaspora in North Rhine-Westphalia is enormous.

Why this route

The GHV-Dortmund link is the textbook "diaspora corridor": a route whose load factor is stable through the year, peaks for every Romanian holiday and barely cares about the leisure market. Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum, Essen — the entire Ruhr has Romanian communities, and Dortmund's catchment covers all of them. Frequency is high — six or seven operating days in summer is normal. Romanian-language signage is on the airport walls because there's no point pretending otherwise.

Getting from the airport to Dortmund

DTM is 13 km east of Dortmund proper. The shuttle bus to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof runs every 30 minutes (€8.50, 25 minutes, payment to driver) — from Hbf you're on the Deutsche Bahn ICE network with one-stop hops to Köln (50 minutes), Düsseldorf (30 minutes) and Essen (15 minutes), and a 4-hour ride to Berlin. The ICE terminal at the airport is misleading — most onward Romanian travellers transfer at Dortmund Hbf, not from a long-distance train at DTM. If you're heading further west into the Netherlands or Belgium, the train is faster than driving. Don't rent a car from the airport unless you're staying outside the urban belt; parking in inner Köln or Düsseldorf is a nightmare.

Return-leg tips

The Brasov-bound Dortmund flight is the route most likely to have a full hold — German-bought goods are cheap and Romanian preferences are strong: tools (Bosch, Stihl), German dairy, supplements, kids' nutrition (Holle, Hipp), all legal, all worth packing carefully. Most travellers ship heavier items separately by van service rather than checked bag. DTM's terminal is small enough that you don't need more than 90 minutes from check-in to gate. The duty-free is ordinary and the airport food is overpriced — eat before security.
