Memmingen (FMM, "Munich West" in Wizz marketing — that's generous) is a small airfield in Bavaria, 110 km west of Munich proper. It's a low-cost-only operation with one terminal, no jet bridges, and a service profile that assumes you came for the price, not the experience. From Brasov the route fills two niches at once.

Why this route

Memmingen is the cheapest indirect path into Bavaria for anyone willing to take a connecting bus. Wizz operates the route with one or two flights a week year-round, doubling around peak ski and Oktoberfest weeks. Diaspora traffic from Romanian communities in Augsburg, Ulm and the southern Bavarian belt is steady, and increasingly the route also serves leisure travellers heading to the Allgäu or Tyrolean Alps for skiing — Memmingen is closer to Garmisch and Innsbruck than Munich International is.

Getting from the airport to Memmingen

The FlixBus from FMM to Munich Hauptbahnhof leaves timed-to-flights (75 minutes, around €17, book on the app or buy a ticket onboard with card). Allgäu Airport Express is the alternative — faster, more expensive, sometimes drops you closer to your hotel. Heading south to Innsbruck, Imst or Garmisch, rent a car at the airport (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz desks in arrivals) — the Allgäu autobahn is empty outside ski weekends and the drive is genuinely scenic. Don't expect public transit to compete; bus connections south are slow. If your onward destination is Munich centre, the train from Buchloe (15 min by bus from FMM) is sometimes faster than the FlixBus when the autobahn is clogged.

Return-leg tips

The Bavarian return haul is heavy on Lederhosen-shop finds (genuine, not the Munich tourist-strip stuff), Aldi Süd / Lidl bulk-buys (powdered milk, vitamins, cleaning supplies — Romanian-bought equivalents are 30-40% more) and good German chocolate. FMM has effectively no duty-free worth visiting; buy in town. Security is quick because the airport is small, but the gate area is one big tin shed with limited seating — bring a jacket in shoulder season because the heating is industrial. 75 minutes airport-to-gate is enough.
