Arriving in Milan
Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the larger of Milan's two main airports, 45 km northwest of the city — a real long-haul gateway with two terminals and a transfer hall that serves Star Alliance, OneWorld and SkyTeam carriers. From Brasov it's a two-and-a-bit hour flight that drops you into the heart of Italy's economic capital with a high-speed train link to Centrale.
Why this route
Wizz prioritised Brasov-Milan because the Romanian community in Lombardy and Piedmont is one of the largest in Europe, and the same flight that carries diaspora-visit traffic on Friday afternoons carries leisure traffic going north for the lakes, the Dolomites or onward to Switzerland. Frequencies are high — typically 4-5 days a week year-round, with summer weekend doubles. It's also one of the few GHV routes where flexible-fare upgrades are actively worth pricing, because last-minute fares can run reasonable when other carriers are sold out.
Getting from the airport to Milan
The Malpensa Express train runs every 30 minutes between MXP Terminal 1 and Milano Centrale (53 minutes, €13). A second branch goes to Cadorna (Stazione Nord) which is closer to Castello and the Duomo — pick whichever station is closer to your hotel. The terminal-to-terminal shuttle is free if you've booked the wrong one. Onward connections are where Malpensa really earns its keep: the same Centrale arrival puts you 90 minutes from Como, two hours from Bergamo via the lakes line, and three hours from Zurich on the EuroCity. Don't take a taxi from the airport — €110 fixed-rate is gouging when the train drops you the same place for €13.
Return-leg tips
Italian leather, Lombardia DOP cheeses (Taleggio, Gorgonzola) and Piemonte wines are the Brasov return haul. Vacuum-packed cheese keeps fine in checked baggage if your flight is under four hours, which it is. Eataly Smeraldo near Garibaldi is where most diaspora stock up — better selection and prices than airside, even after factoring in the train back. MXP security can be slow, particularly Saturday mornings; the non-Schengen pier is in T1 north end, so it's a long walk from check-in. Two hours minimum for non-rush slots, three on summer Saturdays.
