Arriving in Rome

Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is Italy's primary international gateway, and on the GHV-FCO route the headline isn't really "Rome" — it's that you can fly to a major Italian airport in three hours and do the city in a long weekend without burning a leave day on transit. Fiumicino is 32 km from the centre but the direct rail link makes it feel closer than that.

Why this route

The Brasov-Rome link punches above its weight because it replaces two bad alternatives: an eight-hour drive to Otopeni then a flight, or a 28-hour drive across Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia. Italian-Romanian leisure traffic is massive, and the route also carries a steady contingent of older Romanian pilgrims heading for Vatican-organised tours. Wizz Air operates it on a frequency that varies summer to winter — typically 3 flights a week in low season, 5 in high.

Getting from the airport to Rome

Leonardo Express trains run from FCO to Roma Termini every 15 minutes (32 minutes, €14, no stops, machines accept cards). The cheaper FL1 regional train runs to Trastevere and Ostiense with stops along the way — €8, but slower and luggage-tight on a Friday evening. Avoid the unmarked taxi touts in the arrivals hall; the proper taxi rank quotes a fixed €50 fare to anywhere inside the Aurelian walls and the queue moves. If you're connecting onward — to Naples by train, for instance — the airport rail link drops you 30 metres from the high-speed Frecciarossa platforms, so a same-day connection to Florence or Milan is realistic if you land before noon.

Return-leg tips

The classic Italian return cargo is olive oil, parmigiano and pasta, all of which are cheaper at any Conad or Carrefour Express in town than at Fiumicino's airside shops. Buy the day before, vacuum-pack the cheese in any supermarket, and pack carefully — wedges and bottles count toward your hand- luggage weight. FCO security has separate fast-track lanes for non-Schengen flights to Romania; signage is clear once you find Terminal 1. Build 2.5 hours minimum on weekends — Italian holidaymakers cluster at the same time slot you do.
